Why You'll Love these Spicy Margaritas
- They have the best balance of flavors! Between the flavorful Tajín rim, the heat from the sliced chile peppers, the fruitiness from the pureed mango and fruit juices, and the smoke from the mezcal, these margaritas have the best flavor!
- They're super quick and easy to make. If you're looking for a good margarita which is also ready in just about 10 minutes, then this is the one for you!
- The prettiest drinks! Between the color from the mango puree and the Tajín rim, these margaritas are stunners!
Ingredients for this Cocktail
This cocktail has a relatively simple list of ingredients and we've also included some substitution options below.
- Honey - To make the rims of the glasses sticky. You could also use some simple syrup.
- Tajín - For rimming the glasses! If you've never had it before I recommend testing a bit before rimming your glasses so you can determine if you prefer just a little or a thicker rim! It does have a pretty sour and spicy flavor so if you want this drink to be milder then I recommend a lighter rim, or only rimming one side of the glass.
- Chile pepper slices - Give this margarita a little kick! Add as many or as few slices as you like depending on your heat level preference. If the slices have lots of seeds I recommend starting with fewer slices and topping the finished drinks with more if needed. You could also definitely use jalapeño slices in place of chile pepper slices!
- Mezcal - Adds a little smokiness which pairs so well with the other fruity flavors in this drink but if you don't like mezcal it can definitely be omitted.
- Silver tequila - Or gold tequila! Whichever you prefer works.
- Cointreau - Adds a nice orange flavor which pairs with the fruit juices. You can also definitely use triple sec or a different orange liqueur instead.
- Simple syrup - Just a little to add some sweetness to help balance out the spice and heat in this margarita. You could also use agave syrup.
- Pineapple juice - 100% pineapple juice is best whether it be from a can of only juice or a can of pineapple slices or chunks.
- Pureed mango - My favorite way to make this is to puree thawed frozen mango until it is smooth, but you can also buy mango puree!
- Lime juice - Not as much as in a traditional margarita but still a few ounces! I definitely recommend using freshly squeezed lime juice.
- Lime slices sprinkled with Tajín - My favorite garnishes are dehydrated lime wheels sprinkled with a little extra Tajín, but a cut lime wedge also works great!

Step by Step Instructions
This is a super easy cocktail recipe that comes together in just 10 minutes!
Step 1: Rim glasses. Add honey to a small plate and Tajín to another small plate. Dip rims of cocktail or margarita glasses first in honey, then in Tajín. Set aside.
Step 2: Prepare the cocktails. Add chile pepper slices to cocktail shaker and muddle them with the back of a wooden spoon. Add ice to cocktail shaker, then the mezcal, tequila, Cointreau, simple syrup, pineapple juice, pureed mango, and lime juice.
Step 3: Finish and garnish the margaritas. Shake for 20 seconds then strain into prepared glasses filled with ice. Top with lime slices and additional Tajín if desired.
Tips for Making this Cocktail
- If you're slightly sensitive to the amount of heat and spice in a drink then be sure to be cautious about the amount of Tajín used on the rims of the glasses and the amount of chile slices used.
- Make sure to measure the ingredients so that the drink isn't too strong, sweet, or smoky.
- Speaking of smoky, if you don't like smoky-flavored ingredients then I definitely recommend skipping the mezcal as it is quite flavorful!
FAQs
I had trouble finding Tajín in stores but was able to purchase it from Amazon! I think Walmart may also sell it.
I recommend purchasing frozen mango, letting a portion of it thaw, then blending it up until smooth! Once pureed just measure out the ounces as you would with the other ingredients. You could also puree fresh mango chunks as long as the mango is ripe.
If you're looking for other different ways to make margaritas, we recommend an orange margarita, cucumber margarita, or watermelon margarita!
Storing and Freezing
This margarita is best served right away, as storing leftovers in the refrigerator will cause the ice to melt and the drink to become watery. If you're pureeing your own mango then that can be blended ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container or jar for 2-3 days.
I don't recommend freezing this margarita.
