This polyjuice potion spritz is a fun color-changing cocktail take on the magical Harry Potter potion, perfect for a themed party drink! It's an easy drink to make that changes color with butterfly pea flower tea and is extra spooky thanks to some edible glitter.
This fun and spooky drink will transport you right to the wizarding world! If you're a Harry Potter fan you will love this polyjuice potion cocktail. The Chamber of Secrets is personally one of my favorite Harry Potter books, and this easy spritz recipe is a fun copycat of the magic potion in that book. If you're looking for themed cocktails for a halloween party (or Harry Potter party!) this recipe would be perfect.
While this cocktail might not change you into a different person like the actual magical brew does, it does change color thanks to butterfly pea flower tea! Butterfly pea flower tea starts off a super vibrant deep blue, and when mixed with an acid it transforms into a bright purpleish pink color. In this recipe the St. Germain, prosecco, lime juice, and tonic water all help to transform the tea into different colors! It's super fun to watch and the drink ends up being a vibrant color. Some edible glitter is also used to give it an extra magical look.

Why You'll Love this Spritz
- It's a fun Harry Potter recipe. If you love the Harry Potter series then you will love this fun drink that is reminiscent of the infamous magical potion from the second book.
- It's super pretty! Thanks to the color and the edible glitter this is a sparkling purple drink that would be sure to impress your guests.
- It's not only pretty but also super tasty. This spritz is a take on the hugo spritz so if you're a fan of that drink then you will love this magical version.
Ingredients for this Harry Potter Cocktail
This recipe uses a handful of ingredients, and don't worry, you won't have to go searching for horn of a bicorn or any other wild ingredients found in the actual polyjuice potion recipe!
- Butterfly pea flower tea - I was able to find butterfly pea flower tea on Amazon (the exact one is shown in this ingredients photo). You should also be able to use butterfly pea powder, I just haven't tried it so the preparation directions may be slightly different!
- Mint - Fresh mint for muddling in the drink and for garnishing! For an extra spooky look you can burn the mint garnish so it's a little smoky and blackened.
- St. Germain elderflower liqueur - If you can't find St. Germain you can substitute it with another elderflower liqueur. For a mocktail version of this recipe I would recommend using lemonade or pear juice.
- Edible silver glitter - Optional but adds such a magical look to the drink! I'm usually able to find it at Michaels, and you could also definitely use gold in place of silver. You'll also need to use more than you think to really get the drink sparkling! It will settle after a while so just give it a good stir to get it moving again. Also make sure to mix it well with the St. Germain before adding in the ice otherwise it tends to clump up on to the ice.
- Prosecco - For a mocktail I would recommend using a non-alcoholic prosecco or substituting it with ginger beer or ginger ale.
- Lime juice - Pairs so well with the elderflower liqueur and also helps to change the color of the drink to a slightly more pinkish purple. You could also use lemon juice instead, I just prefer lime with the other ingredients.
- Tonic water - The acidity also helps change the drink's color and it adds a little extra flavor and a subtle sweetness.

Step by Step Instructions
This is a simple cocktail recipe that anyone in the muggle world should be able to prepare with ease!
Step 1: Prepare the butterfly pea flower tea. Prepare the butterfly pea flower tea by adding the tea bag to 125 milliliters of very hot water (or according to package directions if they differ). Let the tea bag steep until the tea is a very deep blue. Set aside and let cool.
Step 2: Muddle the mint with the St. Germain and mix in the edible glitter. Add leaves from 1 sprig of mint and 1 ½ ounces St. Germain elderflower liqueur to each cocktail glass. Muddle the mint leaves then stir in some edible glitter until it is well combined.
Step 3: Add the butterfly pea flower tea. Fill each glass with ice then add 1 ½ ounces of the prepared butterfly pea flower tea to each and watch it turn from blue to purple!
Step 4: Add the prosecco and lime juice. Add 3 ounces prosecco to each glass followed by ½ ounce lime juice, both of which will help turn the drink a more pinkish purple.
Step 5: Finish the drink. Top each glass with tonic water and stir to make the edible glitter swirl! Garnish with a smoked mint sprig.
Tips for Making this Cocktail
- Make sure to steep the butterfly pea flower tea for long enough so that it becomes a deep vibrant royal blue. I find it helps to swirl the tea bag around to get the most color out.
- Mix the edible glitter well into the St. Germain until it is very combined, otherwise when you add the ice it will become clumpy and not swirl into the drink as well.
- Since this is a variation of a spritz recipe I would not recommend substituting the St. Germain for any strong-tasting alcohol like vodka or gin.
FAQs
Yes! I would recommend substituting the St. Germain with lemonade or pear juice and the prosecco with a non-alcoholic version, ginger beer, ginger ale, or a lemon-lime soda like Sprite.
While all of the ingredients may differ (thank gosh!) polyjuice potion in the book is known for changing people into a different person, so the color-changing abilities of this cocktail play into that fun aspect!
Definitely! I would prepare it in a large punch bowl and leave out tonic water and sprigs of mint for people to finish their drinks with.
I personally think thanks to the color and edible glitter this drink has a spooky enough look, but if you're familiar with using dry ice safely then you could definitely add it! Just make sure to always follow safety guidelines and never consume the actual dry ice cubes.
Storing and Freezing
This cocktail is best served right away, as storing leftovers in the refrigerator will cause the ice to melt and the drink to become watery.
I do not recommend freezing this recipe.
